1 - Monologue:: Killer to Reader

Killing someone is no child’s play especially when you are likely to be the prime suspect.
Problem with most of the murder plans is that they can’t be rehearsed. You can’t expect a retake from the quarry if something goes wrong. You just have to plan it perfectly. Execute it as per the timeline and blueprint.

What quality guru Philips B. Crosby had said? Yes, ‘Do it right the first time.’ Murder is no less than a quality project and simultaneously it is, sans doubt, an artistic performance too. Murder is a proposition that demands soundness of mind, coherence of thoughts, meticulousness of plan and dedication of execution, right to the end where the quarry is very much dead to your satisfaction and to the distress of the law and investigating authorities.
The root of every murder is one or more motives. No one moves around killing people unless one has completely lost ones marbles. But for a rational, civilized and educated fellow, there needs to be a motive to kill. There must be something in it – money, power, position, lover, revenge or something of the sort. But then, motive brings all kinds of risks along. It is the motive that investigating authority seeks first. Taking the lead of motive the law builds up the investigation strategy and in several of the cases goes for culprit’s jugular.

That’s why it becomes imperative for the prospective murderer to identify the people who share common motive to kill the same person whom murderer is targeting. Then it becomes comparatively easier for the prospective murderer to weave the murder plan in such a way that needle of doubt fluctuates intermittently over the ones who hold a motive behind the murder. Of course, the murderer would be among those suspects but then murderer is not alone now. The only next thing remains is to arrange for an iron clad alibi which saves the real culprit and brings poor, unsuspecting, innocent scapegoat under the blade that cannot provide any alibi.
Murders fall into two major categories – ‘Do away’ kinds and ‘Framing’ ones. In a ‘Do away’ murder, murderer commits the crime, law authorities investigate the case, find nothing and case file is dumped as unsolved. ‘Framing’ murders are solved or precisely speaking ‘made to’ solve making investigating authorities ‘think’ that they have solved the case but actually they unknowingly act as puppets of the real culprit who fools them into catching someone else, the innocent fellow, thus going scot free.
The former type of murder is easy to do but is a risky business too since an unsolved case can be reopened. Any old skeleton can pop up your cupboard any time. Who knows?
But the second type – ‘Framing’ murder – is a guarantee to safety. After all law has got somebody to hang! But it is not easy to frame someone. Here, the process is two-fold: first plan and kill the person you like…..i mean you hate. (see the irony). Second, find a scapegoat to frame. Think of and plant proofs that steer the needle of doubt for sure (see the irony) towards scapegoat. This demands a sharp, thinking mind.

I am convinced that I am the proud owner of one such mind. I can plan, weave a web of confusion around the case, arrange for false proofs to frame the scapegoat and whistle along my way to freedom.

Well, first let me throw some light on the incident that made me decide to think of a murder then I shall share the plan with you. After all you are the reader and you cannot spoil my plan. You would rather enjoy finding out how the plan unfolds and hmmmmm….I know what you are thinking now. As story goes on further slowly revealing my plan, you wish to see me caught too. After all, good stories talk of justice served. But different stories have different meaning of justice since each story has a different situation. So does this story. I am sure you will be very disappointed when you will discover eventually how I managed to escape the mandibles of law after successfully committing the crime.

So, why do I need to go for a murder? Reason is plain and simple. Money.

My grandma has decided to nominate my elder brother for all her wealth in her will. She is so pissed off of me or rightly stating my ways of living that she is left with no other choice. After all who wouldn’t be when one has to put up with a young boy regularly indulging himself in liquor, women, gambling and stealing. Liquor had been my refuge since my early teen age. I can’t help getting women off my side since I am – believe me – really good looking, handsome and know how to talk my way with fair sex. Gambling, I consider, is an art and I an artist at his best. It is gambling that had never made me feel want of money until recently. I think people make me get drunk then they cheat me in gambling and rob me of my money. That’s why recently I had to develop one more art – stealing. Charity begins at home so I stole some very fine artwork in my own home, or precisely put my grandma’s home. But since this art is new to me, I was caught in the act last week while stealing a precious stone vase – a family heirloom. That was the day when my grandma gave me ultimatum: either I mend my ways or part my ways with the family.
You must be wondering that I am not killing my brother instead of the old lady due to same reason that he is my brother. No. Actually, grandma has given me one month’s time to straighten myself otherwise she would strike off my name from the will. For next thirty days my name is there in the will. If something happens to my grandma during these days, I shall simply get my share – half of the huge property in the form of hefty cash in bank and land. I, always being a content fellow, am okay with half the share. That way I am always safe and have no grudge against my brother so he can live his own life later and I can mine and law people can go along happily after other cases nabbing culprits without bothering if they really are.
So, this is my motivation behind the murder I sought for. Now, the plan. I have simple taste. I believe in simple plans. My plan is to give my grandma a heavy dose of her medicine which will make her departure from this mortal world quick, easy and painless. That way, it will look like an accidental death of an old fellow whom no one is much bothered about. Every day old people die all around the globe. Who cares? But if your time is bad, there are some creative people always around who can suggest the authorities to have a second look. This demands to prepare for an alibi and so have I. Since I have one month’s time, I shall use this chance to prove that I am now a good boy. Exactly after thirty days I shall execute my plan. And dear reader, as you read along you will see my plan unfolding in all its simplicity and beauty.
