2 - The possible suspects

Back to 1 - Try and try again until you kill

September 7 2013 – Office of GCA Builders Enterprise

‘So this is your final decision Mamaji?’ – Rajan asked for the last time.

GC’s baritone voice hit his ears – ‘When I take decisions people don’t ask me twice. You have one week to mend your ways and give me a reason why I should not expel your name from my will’

Rajan was his elder sister Sudha’s only son.

Alka was busy on her laptop in the same room on a separate table. Out of home she was PA to her father.

‘But I am hardly out of college. Give me some time to get the hang of it’ – Rajan reasoned

‘At your age I had 5 buildings erected designed by me. Narayan had got the deal closed for the whole township.’

Rajan was speechless.

‘And what is that nonsense you call mentalism. Stop wasting your time in such hopeless things.’

‘Mentalism is my hobby and passion Mamaji. It’s not easy. It needs a lot of hard work and years of practice to master such art.’

‘Art my foot! You have 7 days to decide your fate. Decide you have to roam around as a ridiculous magician or learn the business affairs. You will report to Narayan’

‘I am nobody’s baby. I will talk to mummy’

‘Your mummy has given me this idea only. She too is fed up of you. You would not get anything from her too if you do not straighten your ways soon’

‘You can’t do this to me.’

‘See you next week after the party. Now leave. I have important business to attend’

A furious Rajan stomped outside the office as Narayan entered from the side door. He sat in the office adjacent to GC’s. He was AVP of GCABE.

He got some signatures from GC on some papers. GC signaled him to sit.

‘Narayan’ – the baritone – ‘I think you are doing well but you still need to put in some more efforts to replace me as VP, especially on analysis and decision making during vendor management. I am not hiring anybody from outside.’

‘Uncle’ – Narayan smiled – ‘It is fine. I am trying my level best. I have waited for two years. Another year is no big deal. My efforts will never be less’

‘That’s my boy. I was proud of your father -  my late brother and I am equally proud of you.’ – GC smiled. Narayan went back to his office.

GC dialed a number on his cell phone. After two rings the call was received by his partner Mukul.

‘Where are you?’ GC asked

‘On my way. In the lift’ – was the reply

GC ended the call. After a few moments Mukul arrived. After greetings were exchanged he said – ‘I met Rajan downstairs. He was very disturbed.’

‘Disturbed? Then how will he manage his mentalism shows. It needs a great deal of concentration I guess’ – GC retorted.

‘Spare him yaar. He is too young to get serious. Let him just focus on his hobby.’

‘Our business needs young people of his age, sincerity and conviction. What will he do after I am gone?’

‘You are here, he is here….let go of it. Anyway, you are participating in his mentalism show in the party?’

‘That means you are?’

Mukul smiled – ‘I am his fan yaar. Whatsoever, he is a good performer. You in or what?’

‘Let us see’ – GC tried to waive off the subject. Mukul took the hint and walked up to his office, another adjacent room on the left side.

‘Papa’ – Alka said, walking up to GC’s table – ‘this is the file of all the detectives?’ Her volume of voice did not escape to the adjacent rooms.

She opened the file and read the first portfolio – ‘Khoji Khargosh Investigates. Interesting name. Never heard of them.’

‘They are very new but efficient. Have just solved one case.’

‘I think they are the right people for us’

‘Then go ahead. Fix a meeting with them and one word of caution. Be discreet.’
